Here are some of the most common internet jobs and how to get one, even if you don’t have any experience.
How to Spot a Real Online Job and Stay Away from Scams
There are many real online and remote jobs that pay handsomely for the time and effort you put in. There are, however, a lot of scammers that claim to be offering real internet employment, as well as real jobs that pay so little that they won’t help your career.
Esther Inman, a career counselor and the CEO and creator of Virtual Assistant Internship, a company that helps people who want to establish online careers, says, “Online jobs are still jobs.” Inman says that you should stay away from jobs that say things like “work five hours a week and make $1,000.
If you’re not sure what kind of work to look for, here are several online occupations that don’t need much or any experience:
1. Copy Editor or Proofreader
Copy editors and proofreaders have the same job: to make sure that written work is free of mistakes. Proofreaders are the last people who look at a document before it is printed, published, or put online. They check for grammatical and style mistakes, bad formatting, and typos. Copy editors conduct similar work, but they could also change words or sentences in a published article to make sure it is correct and clear.
Companies that write a lot of things may hire proofreaders or copy editors to work in person or from home, either part-time or full-time. However, you can also do this job as a contractor or freelancer on a project basis. You need to know a lot about English spelling and grammar rules, and you need to be able to pay close attention to detail. Before you can get a job as a proofreader or copy editor, you will need to pass a skills test.
If you already know a lot about the field a company works in or the style guide they use, it will probably be a bonus. Copy editors and proofreaders usually have degrees in English, communication, or a similar topic, but not always. However, there are some unusual cases where people can get jobs as copy editors or proofreaders without having worked in the industry before.
2. Entering Data
Data entry clerks take information from a spreadsheet, printed document, order form, or other source and put it into a database, computer program, or spreadsheet. They could also be in charge of making sure that information is correct and checking for faults. For instance, a company that processes financial accounts would need data entry clerks to manually enter or check invoices or other bills for clients outside the company.
Many companies may hire full-time, part-time, or freelance data entry clerks or keyers who only have a high school certificate and no work experience. Companies currently deal with a lot of digital data and information, thus this is a common work-from-home employment. People who wish to work from home will love data entry because it doesn’t always have to be done during office hours.
3. Assistant to the Executive and Virtual Assistant
Depending on the firm, administrative assistants or virtual assistants answer emails and other messages, set up meetings, write memos, keep track of databases and files, and do any other clerical work that the business needs. While An executive assistant is an administrative assistant who works for one or more people in a corporation, usually executives. In addition to their regular administrative duties, they may also manage their boss’s schedule, coordinate their travel, take notes during meetings, and undertake research. This is a fantastic employment for those who “require flexible work schedules, yet are extremely organized, perform well without direction,” and have exceptional problem-solving talents.
In a world that is becoming more and more digital, many administrative assistants can now work completely online, either full-time or part-time. (But not all administrative or executive assistants just work online, so be sure to read the job description thoroughly before applying!) Most of the time, you only need a high school graduation to get one of these jobs, although other employers may want you to have a college degree. Most administrative assistant jobs are entry-level, although executive assistant jobs may require more experience.
4. Manager of Social Media
As businesses’ online presence becomes more important, they require more and more social media coordinators and managers to help them run their Twitter, Facebook, and other accounts. Depending on the company, a social media coordinator or manager might be in charge of things like planning and scheduling posts on different social media platforms, writing copy and making graphics for these posts, answering questions and comments from followers on social feeds, keeping an eye on social performance, and coming up with and putting into action social media marketing campaigns and strategies.
A social media manager might be a low-level job at a small business that doesn’t have a marketing department, or it can be a higher-level job with greater responsibilities, even working directly for a bigger company with a marketing department. Most of the time, the job of social media coordinator is an entry-level or early-career one.
A lot of different types of companies, from tiny enterprises to big multinationals, are looking for remote social media managers and coordinators. These jobs can be full-time, part-time, or freelance. To get a job as a social media manager or coordinator, you need to show that you understand how different social media sites work, especially Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It will also help if you can offer examples of accounts you have successfully managed, whether they are your own or someone else’s.
If you can write well and analyze data, you will also stand out. A bachelor’s degree isn’t always necessary for a job, although many fields will require one in marketing or a related discipline.
5. Representative for Customer Service
This job is great for people who like talking to others and can handle furious customers. However, this job might not be the greatest choice for people with kids or other caregiving responsibilities because a phone support representative needs to have a quiet background and be available at particular hours without interruptions. For some customer care jobs that use email or chat, noise isn’t a problem. Even if they don’t have much experience, companies often recruit customer service agents.
Customer service representatives help customers solve problems or answer questions about a company’s goods or services over the phone, through chat, or by email. This is one of the most common things that people who want to work online do. But you should be careful about the positions you apply for and accept because a lot of them have strict schedules and little possibility for growth. Make sure to ask about promotion opportunities and flexible hours if they are relevant to you.
6. Sales Person
Salespeople and sales agents, often known as sales representatives and account executives, sell their company’s goods and services. Depending on the position, they might discover and contact potential new customers, follow up on warm leads, talk to potential customers to teach them about their company’s products or services, negotiate and finish deals, and re-sign and upsell current clients. This job is great for folks who want to work from home but yet want to talk to a lot of people on a daily basis.
You can choose to work full-time or part-time. You don’t usually need a bachelor’s degree to work as a sales representative, but you do need to be able to write and speak well and persuade people. If a sales job requires you to pay for the product you’ll be selling, hire other salespeople, or merely pay you, that’s usually a bad sign, and you should probably look for work elsewhere.
7. English tutor online
Online English tutors work with students from countries where English is not the main language. Because of the different time zones, this job is “perfect for former teachers or people who don’t mind working really early in the morning.” Companies that hire online English teachers often give you the tools you need to teach, such lesson plans or access to language games or platforms on the internet. Some of these groups will only hire online English teachers who have a bachelor’s degree and native-level English skills. Others will require a teaching credential and a certificate that shows you can teach English as a second or foreign language.
8. A travel advisor
Travel Consultants meet with clients to talk about and learn about their travel needs. They are responsible for helping consumers choose the best travel options depending on their needs, wants, and abilities. They also help clients plan trips, including where to stay, how to get around, insurance, and transportation costs.
